Positive organizations

With this article we want to share some concepts regarding positive organizations (hereinafter ORG+) and the path that GSG has undertaken for about a year to evolve its cultural model in order to experiment with new behaviors attentive to people's well-being starting from the work environments .

 

What is a positive organization?

The ORG+ is a place where people evolve in relationship with others, where a work culture guided by a purpose anchored to collective goals is promoted, capable of promoting the common good and generating social impact. An ORG+ knows that profit cannot be achieved at the expense of people's well-being, it is committed to reducing suffering and thus anticipating sustainable futures.

ORG+, therefore, are not an organizational model but a cultural model.

 

 

 

What studies have been done?

There are several studies in this regard: the University of Berkley has been carrying out research and programs on the science of happiness at work for years.

With SCIENCE OF HAPPINESS we refer to the set of information, research and practices made available by all those scientific disciplines that have demonstrated that happiness is not just an emotion, but a skill that can be cultivated.

The most important study was conducted by Sonja Lyubomirsky, Professor at California University. Sonja carried out a meta analysis in which 225 studies on happiness were compared.

 

 

What did the research reveal?

That happiness depends on the following factors:

 

50% GENES: if we take a group of people, the fact that among them there are some who declare themselves happy and others less depends on a genetic factor.

10% LIFE CIRCUMSTANCES: facts that happen throughout life such as the geographical area in which we live or the family into which we were born, the economic level or school, the social environment, physical characteristics, etc.

40% BEHAVIORS: that is, from our intentional choices.

They are the conscious behaviors with which we choose to act and live our lives. The only part we can act on is 40% of behavior, that is, how we DECIDE to live our lives.

 

How can we align ourselves to ensure that our behavior makes us happy?

Through 4 pillars: these are the principles according to which ORG+ redesign their processes and cultivate behaviors to increase the well-being of people and the organization.

 

1. More positive chemistry and less negative chemistry

 

Whenever our needs for security, stability, recognition, appreciation, belonging and social connection are met, our bodies produce positive chemistry.

The behaviors that activate this chemistry are: RESPECT, KINDNESS, GRATITUDE, CONSISTENCY, COMPASSION, LISTENING, EMPATHY, LOVE, COOPERATION, WELCOME, SUPPORT.

2. More us and less me

 

When group members focus on competitive behaviors they invest their energy in the personal challenge and in finishing first.

If, however, they live in an environment of exchange and cooperation, that energy is naturally diverted towards WE and the achievement of common goals and results: social capital.

The following depend on social capital: the expression of potential, emotional well-being, the health of the immune system, resilience, the ability to deal with stress and depression.

We cultivate our social capital when: we cooperate, we feel involved and involve, we give support and feel supported, we listen, we communicate in a non-violent way, we make information available, we are kind, we dedicate time to others, we share, we have fun together.

 

3. More being and less doing and having

What is my why, my life purpose? If we do not learn to intercept our needs and values, grasp what we are passionate about and can be cultivated to make our talents flourish, if we do not learn to work with our emotional intelligence then it will be difficult to make wise, coherent and effective choices.

 

 

What is outside of us reflects what is inside us and, if we do not take care of our being, we preclude ourselves from expressing our maximum potential.

The happiness that comes from doing is linked to the code: to be you need to know how to do and your happiness depends on being able to do or not do. In order to be happy, the individual will be influenced by the quantity and quality of what he does. The happiness that comes from having is linked to the code: to be you must have and your happiness depends on what you have or don't have. In order to be happy, the individual will be influenced by the quantity and quality of what he can have or not have. The happiness that comes from appearing is linked to the code: to be one must appear. In order to be happy, the individual will be influenced by the liking, acceptance and judgment of others. The happiness that comes from being depends on awareness. Doing, having and appearing are no longer factors on which one's happiness depends, but become simple means of expression. What you have, what you do and what you appear to be, from need and necessity, is transformed into a means for sharing what you are and your happiness.

We cultivate our being when: we learn to use our emotional, mental, physical and spiritual energy; we increase awareness of our needs and values; we intercept and cultivate our life purpose; we learn to identify our dysfunctional mental models and replace them with new and coherent habits; we are able to align our words and intentions with our behaviors.

 

4. More discipline and less chaos

 

The mental model "I'm made this way I can't change" makes us lose hope in the possibility that things can evolve and that we can take responsibility for them.

Happiness is a voluntary muscle and is trained through practices that must have specific qualities, that is, be:

Intentional: we must choose them;

Anchored in a strong purpose: they must make sense to us;

Personal: What works for me doesn't work for everyone;

Constant and long-lasting;

Engaging: we have to listen to each other, if we feel we are losing interest we have to update them.

We are only at the beginning of this journey and we have a lot to do and learn.

In GSG a person was trained during 2020 to begin this TRANSFORMATION and together we are building concrete actions aligned with this evolution.
